What is it used for?
Ursodeoxycholic acid is used for certain liver and bile-duct conditions, including primary biliary cholangitis. It may also be prescribed to dissolve selected cholesterol gallstones when appropriate.

How does it work?
It is a bile acid that improves the flow and composition of bile. It can reduce cholesterol buildup in bile and may help protect liver cells.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow the tablet with water. Take it consistently as directed. Do not stop treatment without medical advice. Regular liver-function tests or other monitoring may be needed.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort or pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about gallbladder, bile-duct, or liver problems. It may not be suitable if the bile ducts are blocked or for some types of gallstones. Antacids containing aluminium and medicines that bind bile acids may reduce its absorption; medical advice is needed about timing. Seek medical advice if severe abdominal pain, worsening jaundice, or persistent diarrhoea occurs.
