What is it used for?
Ursodeoxycholic acid is used for certain liver and bile-flow conditions, including primary biliary cholangitis. It may also be prescribed to dissolve selected cholesterol gallstones when suitable.

How does it work?
It changes the composition of bile, helping reduce cholesterol build-up and improve bile flow. It may also help protect liver cells from the effects of harmful bile acids.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, with water. Follow the prescribed timing and treatment duration, and do not stop it without medical advice. The medicine may need to be taken for a long period and works only for suitable types of gallstones.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea or loose stools, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and itching may occur.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision, especially if there is blockage of the bile ducts, acute gallbladder inflammation, or significant liver disease. Tell the doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding, or other medicines being taken. Antacids containing aluminium and some cholesterol-lowering bile acid medicines may reduce its absorption and may need to be taken separately.
