What is it used for?
Ursodeoxycholic acid is used to dissolve certain cholesterol gallstones and to improve bile flow in some long-term liver conditions, such as primary biliary cholangitis. It does not work for every type of gallstone.

How does it work?
It changes the composition of bile, helping reduce cholesterol buildup and improve the flow of bile through the liver and bile ducts.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed. Swallow the capsule or tablet with water and follow the medicine label regarding food. Treatment may require regular liver tests and may continue for a long period; do not stop it without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, abdominal pain or discomfort, nausea, and indigestion may occur.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. Tell the doctor about gallbladder or bile-duct blockage, severe abdominal pain, jaundice, or other liver problems. Regular liver-function monitoring may be needed. Seek medical advice if side effects are severe or persistent, or if a rash or breathing difficulty develops.
