What is it used for?
Ursodeoxycholic acid is used to improve bile flow in certain liver and bile-related conditions. It may also be prescribed to dissolve certain cholesterol gallstones when suitable.

How does it work?
It makes bile less harmful to liver cells and improves the flow of bile. It can also reduce the cholesterol content of bile, helping dissolve some cholesterol gallstones.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with water. Swallow the sustained-release medicine whole; do not crush or chew it unless advised. Do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort or pain, nausea, vomiting, and constipation may occur.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision, especially if there is severe liver disease, blockage of the bile ducts, gallbladder inflammation, or calcified gallstones. Liver function may need monitoring during treatment. Tell the doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding, or other medicines, particularly aluminium-containing antacids or medicines that bind bile acids. Seek medical advice if severe or persistent abdominal pain or diarrhoea occurs.
