What is it used for?
This medicine is mainly used to prevent and control seizures in epilepsy. It may also be prescribed for bipolar disorder or to prevent migraine headaches, depending on the doctor's advice.

How does it work?
It helps reduce excessive electrical activity in the brain by increasing the effect of calming chemical signals, helping to prevent seizures.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. Swallow the controlled-release tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew it. Do not stop treatment suddenly, even if feeling well. If it causes stomach upset, taking it with food may help.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, sleepiness, dizziness, tremors, increased appetite or weight gain, and hair thinning or hair loss.

Precautions
Do not use during pregnancy unless specifically directed by a specialist, as it can seriously harm an unborn baby. Tell the doctor about liver disease, pancreatitis, bleeding problems, or any other medicines being used. Regular blood and liver tests may be needed. Seek urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual bruising or bleeding, or marked confusion. Avoid driving if drowsy or dizzy, and do not stop it suddenly without medical advice.
