What is it used for?
Sodium valproate is mainly used to control and prevent seizures in epilepsy. It may also be prescribed for certain mood disorders or migraine prevention, but its use depends on the doctor's assessment.

How does it work?
It reduces excessive electrical activity in the brain and helps stabilise nerve signals, helping to prevent seizures.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. This controlled-release tablet should be swallowed whole with water and should not be crushed or chewed. Do not stop it suddenly without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, stomach upset, sleepiness, dizziness, tremor, increased appetite or weight gain, and hair thinning or changes in hair texture.

Precautions
Valproate can cause serious harm to an unborn baby. Women and girls who could become pregnant should discuss effective pregnancy prevention and pregnancy risks with a doctor before using it. Tell the doctor about liver disease, pancreatitis, bleeding or blood disorders, or kidney problems. Seek medical help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual bruising, or worsening drowsiness. Avoid alcohol and do not drive if dizzy or sleepy. Do not stop treatment suddenly.
