What is it used for?
Sodium valproate with valproic acid is mainly used to control seizures in epilepsy. It may also be prescribed for bipolar disorder or to prevent migraine attacks, depending on the doctor's advice.

How does it work?
It increases the activity of calming chemical signals in the brain and helps reduce abnormal electrical activity that can cause seizures.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, at the same time each day. Swallow the controlled-release tablet whole; do not crush or chew it. Do not stop taking it suddenly without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, drowsiness, dizziness, tremor, weight gain and hair thinning or hair loss may occur.

Precautions
Avoid use during pregnancy unless specifically advised by a specialist, as it can seriously harm an unborn baby. Tell the doctor about liver disease, pancreatitis, bleeding problems or a low platelet count. Seek urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual bruising or bleeding, severe rash, or worsening mood or suicidal thoughts. Avoid alcohol and tell the doctor about all other medicines being taken.
