What is it used for?
Vancomycin is an antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by certain bacteria, including resistant bacterial infections. When taken by mouth, it is mainly used for certain infections of the intestine, such as Clostridioides difficile infection. The route of use depends on the product and prescription.

How does it work?
Vancomycin kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from building their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Use only as prescribed. Injectable vancomycin must be given by a healthcare professional. Oral vancomycin should be taken exactly as directed and should not be shared or stopped early without medical advice.

Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea may occur. Injectable vancomycin can cause redness, flushing, itching, or a drop in blood pressure if given too quickly. Kidney problems and hearing problems are important but less common risks.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to vancomycin, kidney disease, hearing problems, or use of other medicines that may affect the kidneys or hearing. Medical monitoring may be needed during treatment. Seek urgent medical help for severe rash, breathing difficulty, severe or persistent diarrhoea, reduced urination, or ringing in the ears.
