What is it used for?
Venlafaxine is a prescription antidepressant used mainly to treat depression. It is also used for some anxiety disorders, including generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

How does it work?
It increases the levels of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain, which helps regulate mood and anxiety.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with food and at about the same time each day. This prolonged-release capsule should be swallowed whole; do not crush, chew or open it. Do not stop taking it suddenly, as the dose usually needs to be reduced gradually under medical supervision.

Common side effects
Nausea, dry mouth, sweating, headache, dizziness, constipation, sleep problems, tiredness, reduced appetite and sexual difficulties may occur. Blood pressure may increase.

Precautions
Use only under medical supervision. Tell the doctor about high blood pressure, heart problems, seizures, glaucoma, liver or kidney disease, bipolar disorder, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek urgent medical help for suicidal thoughts, severe agitation, unusually elevated mood, seizures, severe allergic reactions or symptoms of serotonin syndrome such as fever, confusion, muscle stiffness or fast heartbeat. Avoid alcohol and check with a doctor before taking other medicines, especially antidepressants, migraine medicines, blood thinners or anti-inflammatory painkillers.
