What is it used for?
Venlafaxine prolonged-release capsules are prescription antidepressants used mainly to treat depression. They are also used for certain anxiety disorders, including generalised anxiety, social anxiety and panic disorder.

How does it work?
It increases the activity of serotonin and noradrenaline, chemical messengers in the brain that help regulate mood and anxiety.

How to take/use it
Take exactly as prescribed, usually with food and at the same time each day. Swallow the prolonged-release capsule whole; do not crush or chew it. Do not stop treatment suddenly, as this may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Common side effects
Nausea, dry mouth, sweating, headache, dizziness, constipation, reduced appetite, sleep problems and sexual difficulties may occur. Blood pressure can increase in some people.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about bipolar disorder, seizures, glaucoma, liver or kidney problems, high blood pressure, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seek urgent medical help for severe agitation, fever, confusion, muscle stiffness or diarrhoea, which may indicate serotonin syndrome. Report worsening depression, unusual mood changes or thoughts of self-harm immediately. Avoid alcohol and use caution when driving until the effects are known. Tell the doctor about all other medicines, especially MAO inhibitors and other antidepressants.
