What is it used for?
Venlafaxine is a prescription medicine used mainly to treat depression and anxiety disorders.

How does it work?
It helps increase the activity of serotonin and noradrenaline, chemical messengers in the brain that help regulate mood and anxiety.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed, usually with food and at about the same time each day. Swallow the prolonged-release capsule whole; do not crush or chew it. Do not stop treatment suddenly, as withdrawal symptoms may occur.

Common side effects
Nausea, dry mouth, sweating, headache, dizziness, constipation, sleep problems, reduced appetite and sexual difficulties. It may also increase blood pressure.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about high blood pressure, heart problems, glaucoma, seizures, liver or kidney disease, bipolar disorder, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not use it with MAO inhibitors or certain other medicines without medical advice, as serious interactions can occur. Seek urgent help for suicidal thoughts, severe agitation, unusual mood elevation, or symptoms such as fever, confusion, muscle stiffness or a fast heartbeat.
