What is it used for?
Vildagliptin is used to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, usually along with diet, exercise and sometimes other diabetes medicines.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme called DPP-4, helping the body release more insulin when blood sugar is high and reduce the release of glucagon. This helps lower blood sugar levels.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed and swallow it with water. It may generally be taken with or without food. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. If a dose is missed, follow the prescriber's instructions and do not take an extra dose.

Common side effects
Nausea, dizziness, headache, constipation, and symptoms of a cold such as a sore throat or blocked nose may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when it is taken with certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about liver, kidney, heart or pancreatic problems before use. Liver function may need monitoring. Seek medical help for severe, persistent abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing. This medicine is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
