What is it used for?
Vildagliptin is used with diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It may be used alone or together with other diabetes medicines when additional blood sugar control is needed.

How does it work?
It blocks an enzyme called DPP-4, which helps increase the body’s natural incretin hormones. This supports insulin release after meals and reduces the release of glucagon, helping lower blood sugar.

How to take/use it
Take it exactly as prescribed. It can usually be taken with or without food. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice. If used with other diabetes medicines, follow the prescribed schedule carefully.

Common side effects
Headache, dizziness, nausea, constipation, and symptoms of a common cold such as a sore throat or blocked nose may occur. Low blood sugar is more likely when it is taken with certain other diabetes medicines.

Precautions
Inform the doctor about liver disease, kidney problems, pancreatitis, or allergies to diabetes medicines. Liver function may need monitoring. Seek medical advice promptly for severe, persistent abdominal pain, especially if it spreads to the back, or signs of liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual tiredness. This medicine is not used to treat type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
