What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic injection used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, blood, bones and joints. It may also be used for meningitis and other infections when prescribed by a doctor. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by preventing them from forming a protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Ceftriaxone is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, age and other health conditions. Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in liver test results.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to ceftriaxone, penicillins or other cephalosporin antibiotics, and about liver, kidney or gallbladder problems. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a severe skin rash. This medicine should be used in newborns only under specialist medical advice.
