What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone injection is a prescription antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as certain infections of the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, blood, bones and joints, or brain. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, age, and other health conditions. Do not self-inject or stop treatment early unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects
Pain, swelling or redness at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; and skin rash.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or serious penicillin allergy. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. The doctor should be informed about liver or kidney problems and all other medicines being used. Ceftriaxone must be used carefully in newborns and should not be mixed with calcium-containing intravenous solutions in newborns.
