What is it used for?
Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic injection used to treat serious bacterial infections, such as infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, blood, abdomen, bones or joints. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Ceftriaxone is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of the infection and must be decided by a healthcare professional. Complete the prescribed treatment unless advised otherwise.

Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site; diarrhoea; nausea; rash; and changes in liver test results.

Precautions
Do not use it if there has been a serious allergy to ceftriaxone, other cephalosporin antibiotics or certain penicillin-type antibiotics. Tell the doctor about kidney or liver problems, a history of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, or gallbladder problems. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a widespread skin rash.
