What is it used for?
Ceftazidime and avibactam is an injectable antibiotic used in hospitals to treat serious bacterial infections, especially complicated urinary tract infections, complicated abdominal infections, hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated pneumonia, and certain infections caused by resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

How does it work?
Ceftazidime stops bacteria from building their protective cell wall. Avibactam blocks some bacterial enzymes that can otherwise break down ceftazidime, helping the antibiotic work against certain resistant bacteria.

How to take/use it
This medicine is given into a vein by a healthcare professional. The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection and kidney function. It should be used only as prescribed and the full treatment course should be completed.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, rash, fever, injection-site reactions and changes in liver function tests may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to ceftazidime, other cephalosporins, penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics. The dose may need adjustment in kidney disease. Seek medical help for severe or persistent diarrhoea, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, confusion or seizures. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
