What is it used for?
Ceftazidime is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, blood, skin, abdomen and brain. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
This medicine is usually given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse. The dose and duration depend on the type and severity of infection, kidney function and medical advice. Complete the prescribed course unless the healthcare professional advises otherwise.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, rash, itching, fever, and pain or inflammation at the injection site.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to ceftazidime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or penicillin-type antibiotics. Inform the doctor about kidney disease, as the dose may need adjustment. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe skin rash, persistent or bloody diarrhoea, seizures, confusion or unusual muscle movements.
