What is it used for?
Ceftazidime is an injectable antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including infections of the lungs, urinary tract, skin, abdomen, blood and brain. It is usually used in hospitals or under medical supervision.

How does it work?
It kills susceptible bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective cell wall.

How to take/use it
Ceftazidime is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a healthcare professional. Use it only as prescribed and complete the recommended treatment course. It does not work for viral infections such as colds or flu.

Common side effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, rash, itching, pain or swelling at the injection site, and changes in blood test results may occur.

Precautions
Tell the doctor about any allergy to ceftazidime, other cephalosporin antibiotics or penicillin-type antibiotics. Dose adjustment and monitoring may be needed in kidney problems. Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash, or severe or persistent diarrhoea. Inform the doctor about any history of seizures.
